BCCI president Sourav Ganguly was the first to confirm that the 2020 Asia Cup was cancelled. Even though the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Nazmul Hasan has not delivered a statement on the Asia Cup 2020, BCCI president, speaking on Sports Tak confirmed the development.

The Asian showpiece event was set to be called off after reports earlier suggested the tournament will not be able to go ahead due to the pandemic situation which has hit the entire globe. “In December, we have the first full series. Asia Cup 2020 has been called-off which was scheduled to take place in September,” Sourav Ganguly told Vikrant Gupta on a live Instagram chat.

Former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif did not like the manner in which Ganguly made the announcement and said it is for the Asian Cricket Council to make such announcement and BCCI president is taking undue advantage of it.

“Whether the Asia Cup is canceled or not can be decided by the Asian Cricket Council. Showing undue power will only hurt Asian countries, @SGanguly99 should pay attention to Indian cricket and IPL,” Rashid Latif tweeted.

The 2020 Asia Cup was originally slated to get underway in UAE as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was set to host the tournament in September. But following, the pandemic situation, it was speculated that Sri Lanka will host the tournament.

2020 was seen as a year for marquee cricket tournaments to commence, which included the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup. A decision on the 2020 T20 World Cup will soon be taken and as it looks the event might be postponed to next year.

With the Asia Cup 2020 being called, space opens up for IPL 2020, for which its parent body has kept all options open. One of the options all suggest that the IPL 2020 can be played in September entirely in Mumbai or UAE.
