Sourav Ganguly, one of India’s most decorated cricket captains, is set to take over as the next president of BCCI. The former India captain will file his nomination on Monday (October 14) for the elections, which is set to take place on October 23. According to recent media reports, Sourav Ganguly is likely to be elected as BCCI president unopposed.

The legendary cricketer, however, will be able to serve as the BCCI president for only ten months. After the completion of that period, he will have to go in for a cooling off period from July 2020 under the new rules. Ganguly has been holding posts in Cricket Association of Bengal for the past five years where he currently serves as president and an administrator can only serve six years at a stretch.

And even before taking over as the president, Sourav Ganguly has made his motives clear. The former batsman said that his top-most priority as BCCI president will be to look after first-class cricketers and their financial interest.

“That’s the rule. So we will have to deal with it. My first priority will be to look after first class cricketers. I had requested to the CoA and they have not listened. Ranji Trophy cricket will be the focus. To take care of cricketers’ financial interest,” he told India Today.

Ganguly further said that he is delighted with the timing of his appointment and is looking forward to improving BCCI’s hampered image.

“I am happy with the appointment because this is the time when BCCI’s image has got hampered and it’s a great opportunity for me to do something. Whether you are elected unopposed or otherwise, it’s a big responsibility because it is the biggest organization in the world of cricket. India is a powerhouse. It will be a challenge,” he said.

Sourav Ganguly, nonetheless, is not new to taking on challenges. Indian cricket was going downhill due to the match-fixing scandal in 2000 when he took over as captain. From thereon, he completely transformed Indian cricket. The Indian cricket fraternity will be hoping for the same when Ganguly takes over as BCCI president.
