Sourav Ganguly made his last international appearance in a Test match in Nagpur against Australia. In his farewell Test, MS Dhoni famously allowed him to retire as captain, as he handed over the captaincy to Sourav Ganguly in the final few overs. Towards the end of his career Ganguly had a controversial time.

Ganguly and coach Greg Chappell did not look at each other in the eye. He had a spat with the Australian which saw him being dropped from captaincy and eventually losing his place in the side. However, the former India captain, who pioneered the aggressive brand of cricket in India said that if he would not have retired in Nagpur, he would have been scoring runs in the next two series.

Ganguly, who is now serving as the BCCI president, also said that even now he is fit to play and if allowed six months of training and three Ranji games, he can still score runs for the Indian Test team.

“If I was given two more series in ODIs, I would’ve scored more runs. If I hadn’t retired in Nagpur, I would’ve scored runs in the next two Test series too. In fact even now give me six months to train, let me play three Ranji games, I’ll score runs for India in Test cricket. I don’t even need six months, give me three, I will score runs,” Sourav Ganguly told Bengali newspaper Sangbad Pratidin.

Ganguly, one of the greatest left-handers to have played the game, retired with over 7000 runs in the longest format of the game at an average of 42.17. He has hit 16 centuries and 35 half-centuries in the format.

Known as the God of off-side, Ganguly also scored at an average over 41 in the ODIs, and hit 22 centuries and 72 half-centuries.
