South Africa to adopt aggressive approach to combat Indians in T20I series, says JP Duminy

South African stand-in captain, JP Duminy expressed his excitement over leading South Africans in the upcoming T20I series against India. The left-handed batsman intends to fight fire with fire by adopting the aggressive approach to deal with the Indians in the forthcoming series.

With the change in formats, there exists a change in personnel for the South Africans. Duminy claims these fresh faces will help the home team overcome their dismal ODI series loss to India.

Reeza Hendricks, Junior Dala, JJ Smuts, Christiaan Jonker and Dane Paterson make their way into the South African squad. The first of the three-match series is scheduled to be played on Sunday at Wanderers, Johannesburg.

I think the new faces will help. Something that we spoke about this morning is that we will feed off the freshness of new faces around. Yes, it has been a dismal one-day series for us where India have outplayed us and that’s something that we will have to take on the chin and understanding for us and realisation for us that we are from a finished article going into the world cup a year from now,” said Duminy.

Further, Duminy stated his excitement to lead the side in the absence of Faf du Plessis due to a finger injury. Much like Virat, Duminy intends to bring out the best in himself with the additional responsibility of captaincy.

On South African approach in the coming games

I think it’s a great reality check for us and it’s about each and every player seeing themselves in the mirror and how they can improve, to try and stake a claim for that 15-man squad in a year’s time. But again the focus is on the T20 series and I am excited to be able to lead. I think leadership brings out the best in me and I enjoy the experience of leading people. I am quite excited by it,” said Duminy.

The South African mindset at Wanderers in a rain-shortened match forced Duminy to claim that the men in gold and green would adopt an aggressive approach to combat the Indian batsmen and their wrist spinners.

With an aggressive mindset. The plan is not only to contain them but to try and get them out especially in this format. Your aim is always going to be to try and take wickets. Wickets will reduce the runs on board and with that mindset, we have good plans in place and hopefully it works out for us.” concluded JP Duminy.
