South Africa would have feared the worst when their pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada missed a couple of games in the IPL before eventually returning to home due to a back niggle. Before returning home, Rabada played a huge role in Delhi Capitals’ march to the playoffs of the IPL for the first time since 2012. He left this year’s IPL with an impressive 25 wickets from 12 games. Rabada is still the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing IPL.

South Africa, meanwhile, would have feared the worst after seeing Rabada sustaining an injury just days ahead of the IPL. Dale Steyn and Lungi Ngidi were already nursing their own injuries while Anrich Nortje was ruled out of the World Cup. In such a scenario, seeing Rabada suffering an injury too was a huge blow for South Africa. However, the Proteas are hopeful that injured pace spearhead will be fit in time for the World Cup.

Cricket South Africa’s medical team said they had taken an ‘extra cautious’ approach with Rabada due to his history of back complaints and were confident he will play a role in the tournament.

“The anticipated recovery period for Rabada’s injury is two to three weeks and we are hopeful he’ll make a full recovery to be part of the World Cup squad,” South Africa team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee was quoted as saying by www.cricket.com.au.

All he teams, meanwhile, can make changes to their squads till May 23 without seeking any permission from ICC’s technical committee. Later, the teams can only replace the injured players. However, South Africa will be desperately hoping that Rabada recovers in time as they eye their first-ever World Cup. The twelfth edition of the ODI World Cup will start on May 30. Hosts England will take on South Africa in the tournament-opener.
