India captain Virat Kohli has added yet another feather on his illustrious cap courtesy of his 82-run knock in the one-off T20I against Sri Lanka on Wednesday (September 6). Kohli has now become the batsman with most runs while chasing in T20Is. The right-handed batsman also became only the second player to cross the 1,000-run mark in the shortest format of the game while batting second.
Chasing 171, India were in a spot of bother after both the opener returned to the pavilion with only 42 runs on the board but Kohli, fresh from his two consecutive centuries in the ODI series, started from where he had left in the 50-over format and played a brilliant knock of 82 to help the team chase down the total with ease. He was well-supported by Manish Pandey who remained unbeaten on 51. The duo added 119 runs for the third wicket before Kohli was dismissed by Iduru Udana with the visitors needing just 10 more runs to win.
And during the course of his impressive knock, Kohli made two more records. Kohli not only became only the second player after Brendon McCullum to cross the four-digit mark while chasing, he also left behind the former New Zealand skipper to become the leading run-scorer in T20Is while chasing. Barring Kohli and McCullum, no player has even crossed the 900-run mark with Australia opener David Warner third in the list with 892 runs followed by Martin Guptill and Mohammad Shahzad.
