Stephen Fleming, the former New Zealand skipper, has shown interest in coaching the national T20I side.

His comments have come after Simon Doull, former Kiwi player, wanted coach Mike Hesson and captain Kane Williamson to get replaced in the T20I set-up.

Fleming has now shown interest in coaching the T20I side, which can materialise if Hesson decides to focus on Test and ODI format.

“It’s based on my passion and love for New Zealand cricket. I’ve got a very good relationship with Craig McMillan [the current batting coach] and spend a lot of time talking to him about where the game is going and what he sees. So I enjoy passing on that knowledge, and it comes back to wanting the New Zealand team to be strong,” Fleming told Trackside Radio.

“I enjoy going away and having a strong New Zealand team performing well around the world, it helps my job, and I enjoy getting the New Zealand players in the sides that I’ve got,” he added.

Fleming is currently the coach of two T20 franchises in T20 leagues played around the world.

He is associated with Chennai Super Kings and Melbourne Stars. He has been associated with Chennai Super Kings right from the start of the league (barring two years when CSK was banned).

In 2008, he played for the franchise as a player. Later, he joined the side in the capacity of the Head Coach.

When the franchise got banned for two years in 2016 and 2017, he moved to Rising Pune Supergiant.

He continued his association with MS Dhoni, as he was the captain of the side in the first season of the franchise in IPL. When the franchise made a comeback to IPL, Fleming was given the job of the Head Coach straightaway.

In fact, the franchise is also thinking to make him the head of the CSK academy.

Talking of stint with Melbourne Stars, he joined the franchise in 2015 and is currently part of the set-up.

He has a good record as the coach of T20 sides, and the national team can reap benefits from his experience – both as player and coach.

Presently, Hesson and Williamson already have a job on their hand in the form of ODI and Test series against England. Both the teams have won one contest in five-match series, with three games remaining.
