Aussie skipper Steve Smith has been going through a purple patch especially in the longest format of the game which has seen him break numerous records in his relatively brief Test career so far. Smith has been sensational touch in the ongoing Ashes series so far, and after notching up his 20th Test century in the opening Test at the Gabba in Brisbane, the unorthodox batsman smashed a sensational 239 in the ongoing 3rd Test at the WACA in Perth.

Smith boasts of a stunning average of 62.32 in the longest format of the game which is just the 2nd highest to the Sir Donald Bradman. It goes on to prove the immense success he has had in the Test format. Coming into the Test side as a specialist spinner when Australia was in search of a genuine leg-break bowler following Shane Warne’s retirement, Smith has gone on to become one of the most dominant batsmen in world cricket at the moment.

He is considered on par with Virat Kohli. Former English skipper voiced the same opinion and following his double century in the 3rd Test; he conceded that Smith has also joined Kohli in the list of freaks. In his relatively brief Test career so far Smith has played 59 Tests and have amassed 5796 runs at an astounding average of 62. With the sort of form, he is it won’t be a surprise if Kohli goes on to dominate the longest format of cricket for a long time.

However despite his dream run former Sri Lankan skipper was reluctant to consider him as the best batsman of his generation. A Twitter user asked Jayawerdena, Is @stevesmith49 the best test batsman of this generation? His test average of 61+ is now second to Don Bradman’s. @MahelaJay @maxyklinger. In reply, Jayawardena said, “Long way to go but he is showing class. Brilliant knock on him today.”
