Australian player Steve Smith and Pat Cummins are currently in line to become the captain of the Aussie team in the next few months. However, in a recent interview, both Smith and Cummins revealed that they are not in favour of having one captain across formats.

Previously, Smith was the skipper of Australia in all formats although he was later stripped from the role owing to his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal in 2018.

Apart from being suspended from playing cricket, Smith was also banned from taking a leadership role for Australia.

However, that ban ends next month sparks talk about who will be the skipper of the team in the foreseeable future.

In a recent interview, Smith opened up on the toll that captaincy takes on a player, particularly as skipper across formats.

The 30-year-old said, “It can be draining, that’s for sure. Particularly [with[ the amount of cricket we play now, it can really take it out of you.”

“That’s just my opinion but it’s not my job to decide who can do the job or anything like that. Yes, it can be draining but it can also be done as well,” he added further.

It’s a big ask: Pat Cummins discusses Australia’s captaincy

In a recent interview, former World cup winning skipper Michael Clarke said Cummins should be made the leader of the group.

Now, the 26-year-old pacer has reacted to Clarke’s comments whilst also adding he doesn’t expect just one player to be the Australian skipper in all formats.

“It’s nice of Clarkey to say that but no, I don’t think [about it]. I kind of get a bit bemused each time I’m asked or the topic comes up because we have Painey, who is doing a fantastic job at the moment. Finchy has been brilliant. Maybe down the track but not at the moment,” Cummins said in his interview.

He continued, “It’s a big ask. I’d say it’s probably unlikely but yeah, we will see.”

Australia were recently whitewashed by South Africa, in a three-match ODI series. They will next, host New Zealand in an ODI series having as many matches, Down Under, from 13th March.
