The first of the three-match ODI series between India and West Indies as rain played a spoilsport at the Province Stadium in Guyana. The match started two hours late due to a wet outfield and was a stop-start affair before the umpires abandoned it finally. India skipper Virat Kohli seemed agitated by the rain and said that this kind of events can lead to serious injuries.

West Indies had a sloppy start after Kohi asked them to bat first on a slow Guyana wicket. The double-paced wicket made the life of Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis along with the rain which delayed the game. After three interruptions to the game, the host managed to post 54 runs at the end of 13 overs losing the wicket of Gayle as no more match was possible. The players waited at the balcony for the game to start, but it was not possible any more.

Speaking at the end of the game, Virat Kohli admitted that this is the worst part of cricket. He also talked about the probability of injuries in these situations. Although Kohli had his share of fun dancing with the ground staffs and Chris Gayle, but the rain kept him frustrated.

“It’s probably the worst part of cricket, a stop-start is never a good feeling. Either it should rain out or play the full game. The more stops you have, the more you want to be careful to ensure that the players don’t injure themselves. Cricket has come a long, long way,” Kohli said.

Asked about the challenges of playing in the Caribbean, Virat Kohli said that the team who adjust well will have more success. Both India and West Indies will look to work on that ahead of the second ODI on August 11 (Sunday) at Trinidad.

“A few of the pitches in the Caribbean can really test you. Some pitches might have good pace and bounce but some of them will be on the slower side and you need to be patient. The team that adapts well and plays better percentage cricket will benefit. Both teams will look to do that in the coming days,” Kohli concluded.
