Sunil Gavaskar Birthday: Wishes Pour In For The Indian Great
Updated - 10 Jul 2020, 07:59 PM
As Sunil Gavaskar grew a year wiser on Friday, cricket fraternity poured in their heartfelt wishes for the little master. The lynchpin of Indian batting unit in the 70s and 80s Sunil Gavaskar celebrates his 71st birthday today. Gavaskar, a technically sound batsman, was born on this day in 1949 at Armoor in the present day Telangana.
Sunil Gavaskar was the greatest opener to have played the game. He had enormous talent and concentration which made him difficult to be dismissed. His defensive techniques were brilliant as well which depicted the sheer patience the man had got. Moreover, the little master, had almost every shots in his textbook that a batsman can ever think of.

Gavaskar, however, was not up to the mark as a captain. He often used techniques and bowlers who did not produce the desired result for the national team. Gavaskar’s first Test series as a captain came against the West Indies where he became the first Indian to surpass 4000 runs. He was later stripped of his captaincy as Srinivas Venkataraghavan was said to be having better experience during their tour in 1979.
Gavaskar retired with 10122 runs in Test cricket with an average of 51.12. He accumulated 3092 runs in ODIs at an average of 35.13.
