Just a few days ahead of their first game of this year’s Pakistan Super League, Quetta Gladiators have suffered a huge injury blow. Their star spinner Sunil Narine will miss the start of the tournament due to a finger injury. The spinner had aggravated during the recently-concluded Bangladesh Premier League.  The 30-year-old’s participation for the rest of the tournament is subject to results of a medical examination.

Quetta Gladiators had roped in Narine from Lahore Qalandars in the pre-season trade. Missing Narine will be a big blow for the Quetta-based outfit as they had built their spin unit around him. While Narine is the spin spearhead of the team, the likes of Fawad Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, and Mohammad Asghar were set to partner him. Narine, nonetheless, has ten wickets to his name in 9 games in the Pakistan Super League. Gladiators, meanwhile, have called up Somerset leg-spinner Max Waller as his cover.

Gladiators head coach Moin Khan rued the unfortunate injury but is confident of a good show from Waller.

“Obviously, you cannot like for like replacement of a big player like Narine but we have drafted in Waller and we are confident that he will add value to our team,” said Khan.

“It’s a blow just before the start of PSL but we will try to cope with it. We have got the depth in our squad as there are plenty other match-winners. We wish Narine a quick recovery and hope to welcome him very soon during HBL PSL,” he added.

The Gladiators begin their PSL 2019 campaign on February 15 when they take on last year’s runners-up Peshawar Zalmi.
