Tamim Iqbal has been named Bangladesh’s ODI captain, it was announced after a BCB meeting on Sunday. The opening batsman replaces Mashrafe Mortaza as the captain of the side. Mortaza had stepped down as the captain of the side after the third and final game of the recently concluded Zimbabwe series. Mortaza, however, will continue as a player, subject to selection.

“I cannot say anything about selection. But you have to perform as a captain. And captaincy is a huge pressure, specially in international cricket. But when I think of myself as just a player, in that sense, it is a very good decision for me,” he had said.

Bangladesh’s next ODI assignment is a one-off game against Pakistan in Karachi on April 1. The other ODI cricket they will play this year is a three-match series in Ireland in May. Tamim Iqbal was in stunning form in the ODI series against Zimbabwe, scoring two centuries in three innings to help his side complete a whitewash.

During the course of the series, he also became the first player from his country to score 7,000 ODI runs. Overall, he has amassed 7,202 runs in ODIs at an average of almost 37. He also has 13 tons and 47 half-centuries under his belt in the 50-over format.

Tamim Iqbal is not new to captaincy although he is not a very experienced one. So far, he has led Bangladesh in three ODIs out of the 207 he has played, when he replaced an injured Mortaza last July against Sri Lanka in an away series.
