New season, new players but the same age-old problem for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Just like the very first season of the IPL, the Royal Challengers were once again one of the strongest sides on the paper. With players like Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Shimron Hetmyer, Moeen Ali, Marcus Stoinis and others in their ranks – the Royal Challengers were one of the strongest contenders this season.

The presence of the likes of Gary Kirsten and Ashish Nehra in the backroom staff was another reason of Royal Challengers being one of the favourites. But nothing much changed as Royal Challengers once again failed to live up to the expectations. The season started with six defeats in a row. The Royal Challengers did manage to do well in the second half but it was not enough to help them progress ahead.

There Might Be Some Structural Change Next Year, Says RCB Coach Gary Kirsten

Their season came to an end on Saturday with a morale-boosting 4-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad. The latest season has only extended their poor show in recent times. Over the last four editions of IPL, Royal Challengers have won only 14 games out of the available 43. And now coach Gary Kirsten believes that time has come for them to make fundamental changes to the setup.

“There are some structural changes that need to be made and that have been around for quite a long time,” Kirsten said before the final league game. “This is my first year as the head coach, so I’ve got a better understanding of what those are. We’ll certainly discuss with our owners and look into that for next year.”

The former India coach also pointed out that there might be structural changes in the team in the next season. Well, he could very well mean a change in captaincy as Virat Kohli has just not clicked as the captain of the side.

“I think the most successful franchises in IPL have done that. We’re searching for that in RCB. While there might be some structural change next year, I’m hopeful and confident we’ll have some continuity in our players,” he said.
