At a time when all the spotlight is on MS Dhoni because of the retirement speculations, former Australia skipper Steve Waugh has come out in his defence. The retirement talks have been doing the rounds for over a year now. With MS Dhoni not being at his best with the bat for the better part of the last one year or so, several quarters have said that he should retire now.

The retirement talks, however, gathered steam during the World Cup. Following his poor knock against Afghanistan, PTI reported that the wicketkeeper-batsman would retire from the game at the end of India’s campaign in the World Cup. However, MS Dhoni did not do so as India crashed out of the World Cup at the semifinal stage.

Lates reports are suggesting that MS Dhoni is waiting to come to India before announcing his retirement. And amidst all these, Steve Waugh has said that India would struggle in the absence of their former captain. Waugh, in fact, went on to say that India would have no chances of winning a game without Dhoni.

“I think it is pretty unfair. MS Dhoni has won so many games to India and he has played in the same way over the long period of time. He can get you in a situation that can give you a chance to win the game and without him, there would not be a chance to win a game,” Waugh told ANI.

“Of course, you are not going to win every time. The other day, he was a couple of inches away from being home for the second run. He may have still won that game. I know how hard it is to win a one-day game while chasing and he has done better than anyone in the history of the game,” added Waugh.

Dhoni played a heroic knock against New Zealand in the semifinal but was run-out in the 49th over. He scored 50 and added 116 runs with Ravindra Jadeja to revive the team’s hopes after they were reduced to 92 for 6. India were eventually all out for 221 while chasing 239.
