Former Australia captain Ian Chappell has criticised the Pakistan cricket team and has said that they were abysmal on the recent tour of Australia. Pakistan played three T20Is and two Tests in Australia and failed to make any impact during the series.

“It’s an appalling record really. There were a few people in Pakistan who jumped up and down when I said after the last tour that Australia should stop inviting them, if that’s what it takes to get them to wake up to themselves. Talent wise they’re better than 14 straight losses. They were abysmal this time. This is probably the worst of the lot,” Chappell told Wide World of Sports.

Pakistan kicked off the tour of Australia with a three-match T20I series under a new captain, Babar Azam. Rain in the first T20I denied Australia a chance to win the series-opener. The home team won the next two T20Is and clinched the series 2-0.

Come the Test series, Pakistan lost both the Tests by an innings margin. In the first test, they just managed 240 and 335 in response to Australia’s first innings total of 580. The home team won the opening Test by an innings and 5 runs.

In the second Test, Australia scored 589/3. In response, the visiting team scored 302 and 239 to lose the match by an innings and 48 runs. After dropping Sarfaraz Ahmed for the tour, the visitors made another surprising decision as they did not include Mohammad Abbas in the playing XI for the opening Test.

In the second game, they dropped Naseem Shah and brought in Muhammad Musa, who went for 114 runs in 20 overs. The lack of experience in the bowling department was the prime reason behind Pakistan’s failure to put up a show in Tests.

The recent defeat against Australia was their 14th straight Test defeat in Australia. Pakistan next host Sri Lanka in two-match Test series where Azhar Ali and co will be favourites.
