Tom Banton, England’s opening batsman has extended his contract for the next two years with his Big Bash League (BBL) outfit Brisbane Heat.

The explosive batsman Banton was part of the franchise for the opening half of the ongoing BBL season and managed to score three half-centuries in the first seven games. Banton scored 223 runs across all games, at a mind-boggling strike rate of 176.98.

In his stint, the 21-year-old scored 50 runs in just 16 balls, scoring the fastest half-century in BBL history.

Englishman Banton will extend his stay with BBL outfit Heat as he signed a two-year extension on Wednesday. While starting the season well, he was called up for the national team and thus had to leave his franchise mid-way through the season.

Having played three T20Is, the young opening batsman is currently with England to face South Africa in the ongoing ODI series.

Heat’s coach Darren Lehmann, in an official statement announced by the franchise, was delighted to have roped in Banton for another two years. Lehmann believes Banton can play a vital role for Heat in the next two BBL seasons.

“I think anyone who saw Tom during his seven games for the Heat in the BBL would agree that he is a special player and someone we think can play an important role for us over the next two years,” he said.

Lehman further added, “We wanted to move quickly and are very pleased that Tom has agreed to terms. He’s a good young lad and we think his cricket will only get better from here. He’s got his first IPL coming up and he’s in the English set-up, so we know how highly he is thought of around the world.”

Banton was one of the few bright spots of an otherwise disappointing campaign that saw the Heat finishing seventh on the league table. They managed to rake in just 12 points from 14 matches, which is why the addition of Banton for next season is a massive boost for them.
