With the advent of T20Is, the format was initially considered a bowler’s nightmare. In the recent year, bowlers developed a variety of slower balls and variations to surprise the batters.

However, the fickle nature of the format still remains a graveyard for the bowlers. This may be due to conditions in the outfield, flatness of the deck, short boundaries or just a case of brilliance from the batsmen.

Here is a list of the Indian bowlers with the most expensive spells in T20I cricket for India.

Yuzvendra Chahal

64 vs South Africa, 2nd T20I, Centurion 2018

In the second T20I of the 3-match series against South Africa, Yuzvendra Chahal achieved an undesirable feat of becoming the most expensive bowler in T20Is for India.

Chahal went for an economy of 16 in his four overs. The wet bowl didn’t make it any easier for the leggie. Yuzvendra Chahal faced the wrath of Klaasen and Duminy’s blade throughout his four overs.

Furthermore, the wrist-spinner who caused havoc in the South African camp in the ODIs, could not manage a single wicket. India lost the match by six wickets.

In a match which is remembered for Yuvraj Singh’s 6 sixes off one Stuart Broad over, Joginder Sharma’s undesirable feat went unnoticed as India progressed to the semi-finals of the tournament.

In his spell of four overs, Joginder Sharma conceded 57 runs in his four overs without picking up any wicket. The English came out all gun’s blazing chasing a steep target of 219.

The likes of Vikram Solanki, Darren Maddy, Kevin Pietersen and Luke Wright, in the end, made merry of the slow predictable deliveries from Joginder Sharma.

India won the match comfortably by a margin of 18 runs, powered by knocks from Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh.

Yusuf Pathan

54 vs Sri Lanka, 1st T20I, Nagpur, 2009

Yusuf Pathan might not have impacted with the bat in his T20I career, he did so with the ball. He holds the record for bowling the third most expensive spell in T20I for India.

Pathan had a forgetful outing with the ball at Nagpur, conceding runs at an economy of 13.5 at a visible batsmen’s paradise. India lost the match by a margin of 29 runs, chasing a target of 215.

Mohammad Siraj

53 vs New Zealand, 2nd T20I, Rajkot, 2017

Sunrisers Hyderabad star, who emerged through the ranks into the International level, had a forgetful debut match against the Kiwis at Rajkot. The likes of Guptill, Munro, and Bruce, later on, smashed Siraj to all parts of the ground.

New Zealand posted a total of 196 in front of the Indians, which in the end proved too much for the hosts as the Kiwis won the match by 40 runs.

Ashish Nehra

52 vs Sri Lanka, 1st T20I, Nagpur, 2009

In the same match where Yusuf Pathan recorded an expensive spell, Ashish Nehra also suffered a beating from the willows of Jayasuriya, Sangakkara and Kapugedara.

Nehra was dispatched to all parts of the ground, going at an economy of 13. He only had a solitary wicket, in the end, to show for.
