Ravi Shastri’s re-appointment as India coach has divided the Indian cricketing fraternity into two halves.  Shastri was reappointed as the head coach after Kapil Dev-led Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) interviewed 5 of the 6 shortlisted candidates in Mumbai. The other four candidates were – Tom Moody, Mike Hesson, Lalachand Rajput and Robin Singh. Phil Simmons was also shortlisted but he did not appear for the interview.

Following the interview, Kapil Dev insisted that skipper Virat Kohli’s inputs were not considered. He also said that Shastri was an unanimous choice ahead of Moody and Hesson. However, Shastri’s re-appointment was very much on the cards. Kohli had already made his intentions clear even before India left for the West Indies for a full-tour.

Addressing the media in Mumbai ahead of the departure, Kohli said the team would be happy if Shastri continued as the head coach. Moreover, Kohli has always supported Shastri. Who can forget 2017 when Kohli played a big role in appointment of Shastri as the coach of the side.  Unsurprisingly, the fans took a shot at Kohli once the news of Shastri’s re-appointment was confirmed.

Many believe that Kohli once again played a part in Shastri’s appointment. Here are some of the reactions:

Shastri, meanwhile, has had a successful stint with Team India. Shastri helped India win 11 Tests (played 21, lost seven). Under his tenure, India have been on the top of ICC Test rankings although they lost Test series in South Africa and England. During this period, India won 44 of their 61 ODIs and made the semifinal of the 2019 World Cup. They also won 25 out of the 36 T20Is during this phase.

Recently, India won the T20I and ODI series in the ongoing tour of West Indies. The tour will mark an end to Shastri’s current contract. His new contract will expire after the World T20 in 2021.
