Jasprit Bumrah’s masterclass with the ball and Rohit Sharma’s nonchalant strokeplay has helped MI break their six-match losing streak in the UAE courtesy a thumping 49-run win over KKR in Abu Dhabi.
Chasing 196 to win, KKR didn’t get off to the best of starts as their pace troika of Boult-Pattinson-Bumrah snuffed out for their openers courtesy disciplined fast bowling. The Knights managing a mere 33 runs in the first powerplay,
Shubman Gill played a beautiful stroke to get off the mark but the pressure of playing out a maiden over got to him as top-edged the pull off Trent Boult straight to short midwicket. Sunil Narine flicked Pattinson towards square-leg for a six but the Aussie pacer had the last laugh as he bounced out the off-spinner, with De Kock taking a brilliant one-handed catch.
Dinesh Karthik and Nitish Rana took the attack to Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya, taking them for 23 runs in their two overs to take the score to 2-64 in 9 overs. Chahar had his revenge immediately after the Time out as he pinned DK right in front of the wicket. Kieron Pollard was brilliant with his change of pace and the veteran was eventually rewarded with the dismissal of Nitish Rana, who mistimed a lofted cover-drive as Hardik Pandya took a brilliant catch at the boundary.
With 118 required off the last 8 overs, KKR needed something special from Dre Russ and Eoin Morgan. Sensing the threat of Russell, Rohit immediately brought back his trump card in Jasprit Bumrah.
And, Bumrah was right on the money. The champion fast bowler tested the duo with short-pitch stuff and very nearly dismissed Morgan but for the bails, who did not get dislodged despite the ball hitting the stumps.
Bumrah conceded just 3 runs in his 2 overs and he bettered his figures in his next over and in the process killed the contest as he cleaned up Andre Russell with an off-cutter before including an outside edge of Morgan’s bat to leave KKR down in the dumps at 6-102. Pat Cummins did smash Bumrah for 4 sixes in his last over but by then, the champion fast bowler had already sealed the deal for the Mumbai Indians as the defending champions eventually sealed a commanding 49-run win.

Rohit Sharma’s stylish 80 helped Mumbai Indians post 5-195 against KKR
Batting first, Mumbai Indians didn’t get off to the best possible starts as Quinton de Kock perished in the 2nd over courtesy a mistimed flick off Shivam Mavi.
Suryakumar Yadav may have struggled in the first game but the Mumbai Indians No.3 looked in cracking touch right from the very outset. Yadav laid into Sandeep Warrier in the 3rd over, taking him for four boundaries in what was a masterclass in gorgeous strokeplay.
Rohit Sharma too looked in gorgeous touch from the outset and with signs looking ominous, DK turned to his ace fast bowler, Pat Cummins. Cummins, however, did not get off to the best of starts as a wide was followed by a couple of nonchalant sixes by Rohit Sharma over deep square-leg and deep mid-wicket.
Rohit painting the ground with his sumptuous pull strokes is a sight to behold. Effortless. Magician!#RohitSharma #IPL2020 #MIvsKKR #MI

It was a gorgeous display of hitting by both Rohit and Yadav. While Rohit flayed the attack with his sumptuous pulls, Suryakumar Yadav creamed the likes of Kuldeep for inside-out sixes over deep extra-cover. Sunil Narine (1-22) came brilliantly in his second spell and his tight over led to the urgency of converting a 1 into 2, paving way for SuryKumar Yadav to get run-out.
Both Kuldeep and Narine put a lid on the scoring during their second spell as they conceded just 22 runs in 4 overs. Sharma soon brought up his half-century off 39 balls and in the process became the leading run-scorer against KKR.
Rohit went on to smoke Kuldeep for two sixes to become only the 4th batsman in the history of the IPL to smash 200 sixes. Pat Cummins was greeted with a four and six by Tiwary. Sunil Narine dismissed Tiwary but that did not change anything for Cummins as he did not learn from his past mistakes and continued bowl short-pitch stuff, only to get smashed by Hardik Pandya.
Rohit was eventually dismissed when he mistimed one-off Shivam Mavi as Pat Cummins completed a good catch in the deep. KKR pulled things back somewhat after the unfortunate dismissal of Hardik Pandya, who got hit-wicket. While Pat Cummins (0-49 in 3 overs) had a forgettable day, Shivam Mavi (2-32 in 4 overs) was the pick of the bowlers and he played a huge role in KKR restricted the Mumbai Indians to 5-195 in 20 overs.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to Mumbai Indians win over KKR-
If you had to pick the KKR batsman who would hit an on song Bumrah for 4 sixes in an over, this scenario wouldn’t be in your first 5 guesses. Well played Cummins, handy help to the NRR ?

Solid comeback from @mipaltan led by the skipper @ImRo45 and @surya_14kumar then with the ball Boult Pattinson and Bumrah all contributed. Chahar picked up DK so solid overall.

Whoa! KKR can’t win but Cummins messes up Bumrah’s bowling figures with a flurry of 6s. Made some amends for his profligate bowling

Fantastic bowling from Jasprit Bumrah. He's taken the wicket of Andre Russell and now Eoin Morgan and has only conceded five runs in his three overs. Mumbai Indians easily dispatching Kolkata Knight Riders.
— Ross Barnett (@rbarnett08) September 23, 2020
Jasprit Bumrah has conceded 3 runs from his first two overs, one of them bowled to the two fastest scoring batsmen in the world over the last 18 months. It's unfair he only plays for Mumbai, he should be nationalised and evenly distributed to all sides. #IPL2020 #KKRvMI

Fuck up the game as much as possible, put yourself in a situation far from winning, get out & hope Russell comes in & does some magic. KKR's template most times post Gambhir.
