Twitter Reacts As MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav Guide India To Comprehensive Win
Updated - 02 Mar 2019, 10:19 PM
Kedar Jadhav and MS Dhoni scored fifties as India recovered from 99 for 4 to beat Australia by six wickets in the first ODI.
Chasing a modest 237, India were off to a poor start as Nathan Coulter-Nile dismissed Shikhar Dhawan for a first-ball duck. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli then steadied the ship, taking the score past the fifty run-mark. However, just when it looked the duo is well set and would bat India to a position of strength, Australia struck back by dismissing both of them in quick succession.
Adam Zampa broke the 76-run stand between Rohit and Kohli by sending back the latter for 44. Coulter-Nile then accounted for Rohit to reduce India to 95 for 3 before Zampa struck again to remove Ambati Rayudu and leave India reeling at 99 for 4.
Kedar Jadhav and MS Dhoni then scored unbeaten fifties, sharing an unbeaten stand of 141 to take India home.
Earlier in the game, India restricted Australia to a modest total of 236 for 6. Australia’s decision to bat first backfired early on. Skipper Aaron Finch lasted just two balls before edging Jasprit Bumrah behind the stumps. Usman Khawaja and Marcus Stoinis then steadied the ship by adding 87 runs for the second wicket. Kedar Jadhav broke the stand when he had Stoinis caught for 37. 10 runs later, Vijay Shankar took a stunner to send back Khawaja and put India on top. Khawaja scored 50.
Kuldeep Yadav then accounted for Peter Handscomb before Mohammed Shami sent back debutant Ashton Turner to reduce Australia to 169 for 5. And just 4 runs later, Shami came up with a stunning delivery to get rid of Glenn Maxwell. The hard-hitting batsman was looking set for another big score after racing away to 40. Alex Carey (36*) and Coulter-Nile (28) then played some handy knocks to guide Australia to a challenging total.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the game:
This is not the easiest surface to bat on. Good to see a 230-240 game sometimes. Dhoni territory.

Pressure on India after Rohit falls. Rayudu and Dhoni have the experience, Jadhav and Shankar are handy willow wielders. Not the best pitch to bat on though

Perfect situation for Dhoni to bat. Given the target, India will still have a chance if he takes the required run rate up. #INDvAUS

As said, not an easy deck to score. India need to stay up with the rate here. Don't want to leave too much to do later.

"That is CLASS from Virat Kohli. Capital C, capital L, capital A, capital S, capital S again" – Sunil Gavaskar taking English classes in the commentary box. Such a thoughtful guy. #INDvAUS

Not an easy deck to score freely, don't think Australia are as short as expected but dew is vital. If it does not come in, will stay hard

Plucky partnership between Coulter Nile and Carey has helped Australai to 236, but this looks hardly enough to stymie a strong Indian team unless the top order caves in for some reason. Kuldeep and Shami outstanding

Vijay Shankar caught Usman Khawaja. Another instance where Indian MIG 21 destroyed Pakistani F16. #INDvAUS

So Vijay Shankar's first over reminded me of RP Singh's first spell on England tour of 2011 when he was called back by Dhoni to play for Ind from his vacation in Miami.

Shami’s accuracy and potency with the new ball is the story of the match thus far….building an even stronger case as a first choice seamer to partner Bumrah ? ? #IndvAus

Vijay Shankar is from Management quota. #INDvAUS

Very different game once Bumrah and Shami had bowled their first spell. Pressure gone with Vijay Shankar and Jadhav bowling. Seems today 10 might be too many for them.

When a free wicket Finch has a place in Aus team, why not KL deserve a spot in IND team???
