Team India have announced their 15-member squad for the three-match Test series against South Africa starting from October 2. Young talented batsman Shubman Gill has earned his maiden call-up after consistent outings in the domestic cricket.
The selection panel headed by MSK Prasad has dropped incumbent opener KL Rahul who has struggled to put runs on the board. The Karnataka-born opener returned with a half-century and as a result, was dropped from the squad.
The selectors have also dropped Umesh Yadav from the squad. Instead, they have gone with an addition spinner in Kuldeep Yadav. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are the two other spinners in the squad.
Shubman Gill, who has been waiting in the fringes, has finally earned the much-deserved call. He was in contention for the series against West Indies but missed the cut. On the tour of West Indies, Gill scored 244 runs for India A in two unofficial Tests with highest-score of 204*.
Although he did not get enough runs in five-match one-day series against South Africa A, Gill scored 95 runs in the first unofficial Test to push for his Test selection. Shubman Gill will hope to grab this opportunity with both hands and justify his selection.
The three-match Test series will kick off from October 2 (Wednesday) in Visakhapatnam. Pune and Ranchi will host the second and the third Test starting from October 10 (Thursday) and 19 (Saturday) respectively.
Meanwhile, wishes poured in for young Shubman Gill soon after the news broke out on social media. Many welcomed the move and congratulated the Punjab cricketer to showcase his skills at the highest stage.
So either Rohit Sharma or Shubman Gill to open the batting. I suspect the team management is looking at Rohit and Gill gets to feel his way around the team. This cannot be a short-term call, India has to be ready to have Rohit opening in the away tours starting 2020.

Shubman Gill is in the squad.
If the management has learnt anything from the series defeats in SA and England they will play Gill as opener instead of Sharma.
That said, Sharma may well get a chance, only to get dropped till the 3rd and Gill impressing in the last test.
