Much like Day 2, the third day of the Durban Test match belonged to the visitors who amassed a lead of over 400 in the second innings. Australia is currently in the driver’s seat while South Africa can only hope for a miracle to save the Test match.

Yet again, it was poor lights at Durban which curtailed the day’s play. Even though the likes of Maharaj, Morkel and Rabada bowled their hearts out in the day, the Proteas could not manage to bowl the Australians out in the second inning.

Australians are comfortably placed at 213/9, powered by a priceless half-century from Cameron Bancroft earlier in the day. Steve Smith and Shaun Marsh chipped in with vital thirties to take the game further away from the host.

Aussie skipper Steve Smith brought up his 10,000th international run for his country. He became the quickest from Australia to achieve the feat, bettering the record from Matthew Hayden.

Smith needed just 232 outings to achieve the glorious feat and is now jointly fifth fastest overall to reach the coveted position. Only the likes of Hashim Amla, Joe Root, Viv Richards, and Brian Lara have managed to bring up the five-figure mark in lesser time than Smith.

The other talking point from the game was the dismal umpiring decisions, which pushed the game further away from the Proteas. Also, this was the third occasion when the game was halted prematurely due to bad lights.

Twitter took notice of all the developments from the third day of the Durban Test match. Few lashed out at South Africa, while others mocked the cricket board for their scheduling at Kingsmead.
