Having shown great intent on Day 3, Cheteshwar Pujara, unfortunately, missed out on a well-deserved century courtesy of poor decision-making on the fourth day at Headingley. Pujara offered no shot to an incoming delivery and was adjudged LBW after England reviewed the umpire’s call.

A resilient performance on Day 3 from the Indian batsmen was shattered almost immediately the next day. Overnight batsmen, Pujara and skipper Virat Kohli, watchfully played out three maidens before the fourth one from Ollie Robinson produced the wicket England was desperate for.

After bowling a few deliveries that were going away from the batsmen, Robinson brought one back in which caught Pujara off-guard. He shouldered arms but was rapped on the pads followed by a loud appeal. Richard Kettleborough turned the appeal down but England reviewed it.

Although the impact was outside off, there was no shot offered by Pujara and the ball went on to crash into the off-stump. The decision was reversed and Pujara was left distraught, unable to add a single run to his overnight score of 91.

After Pujara’s knock last night, Rohit Sharma had revealed that the team had backed him throughout. His batting was never under the scanner as the team never brought it up.

“The talk is outside, not inside. We haven’t had a single talk about his batting. Our memories are little bit shortened. We need to think what he has done over the period of years,” Rohit had said after Day 3’s play.

Although it’s too early to believe that Pujara is back in form, there were glimpses of his old self that bodes well for the team and the fans.
