West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has thanked India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sending COVID-19 vaccines to his home country of Jamaica. India had sent 50,000 doses of the Coronavirus vaccine earlier this month under the Vaccine Maitri initiative.

The multi-county COVID-19 vaccination drive has benefitted a lot of nations across the world, with the 79-member African, Caribbean, Pacific (ACP) group and the 15-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM) praising India at the WTO for facilitating vaccine supplies to those in need.

Apart from Jamaica, St. Lucia also confirmed that India supplied an additional 175,000 vaccines to five CARICOM member states.

Earlier this month, Jamaica had thanked India for sending 50,000 doses of coronavirus vaccines. Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness had shown his gratitude to India and PM Narendra Modi on Twitter.

“I am extremely pleased to report that yesterday afternoon, we received our first shipment of 50,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine donated by the Government of India. We express our deep appreciation to the Government and people of India for this very much-needed support,” Holness had said. 

Jamaica had received 50,000 doses of AstraZeneca while Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and Grenadines, and Suriname received 175,000 doses from India.

Jamaican cricket star Andres Russell also took to Twitter and thanked the Indian High Commission and PM Narendra Modi for his gesture of sending COVID-19 vaccines to his country and other nations in the Caribbean.

“I just want to say a big, big, big thank you to Prime Minister Modi and the India High Commission. The vaccines are here and we are excited. I would love to see the world going back to normal. Jamaica people really appreciate it and just to show that we are more than close, India and Jamaica are now brothers. I appreciate it and stay safe over there. Peace,” Russell said in a video posted by the official Twitter handle of India in Jamaica.

Apart from Russell, former West Indies cricket greats like Sir Vivian Richards, Richie Richardson, Jimmy Adams, and Ramnaresh Sarwan had thanked PM Modi previously for helping the Caribbean with COVID-19 vaccines under India’s Vaccine Maitri initiative.

India has supplied 36.37 million vaccine doses to 35 countries and UN health workers, as of March 1, under the `Vaccine Maitri’ initiative. Thirty-nine more countries will be supplied in the coming days in Europe, North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, South-East Asia, and the Pacific Islands.
