India’s debutants – Mohammed Siraj and Shubman Gill – combined brilliantly to dismiss the dangerous Marnus Labuschagne in the ongoing Boxing Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Labuschagne had weathered the early storm and steadied the ship for the hosts after India started brilliantly with the ball. Tim Paine won the toss and decided to bat first but it did not take him and Australia long to regret the decision. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Joe Burns for a duck before Ravichandran Ashwin accounted for Matthew Wade and Steve Smith to reduce Australia to 38 for 3.
But before India could make further inroads in the game, Labuschagne and Travis Head stopped the rot. The duo ensured that Australia did not lose any more wicket in the first session. They started strongly after lunch too before Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Head for 38 after lunch to end the 86-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Labuschagne, nonetheless, was still the danger man and was looking comfortable at the crease. But just when it looked like he was set for a big knock, India’s debutants got rid of him by executing an excellent plan. Labuschagne was batting on 48 when Mohammed Siraj bowled one to him that was full and angling into his pads.
Labuschagne, on his ended, went for a flick but failed to keep his shot grounded. And it was enough for Shubman Gill to take a stunning diving catch. The wicket was Mohammed Siraj’s first in Test cricket. Meanwhile, Australia were on 136 for 5 when tea was called. Skipper Tim Paine and Cameron Green were at the stumps.
