Oh, Joe Root! Is there anything you can’t do currently? Everything you are touching is turning into gold.
This was the exact thought running through Indian fans’ minds after they saw the English captain pull off a stunning one-handed catch at short-cover to send vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane packing.
It all happened in the 27th over of the Indian innings when Ajinkya Rahane stepped out of the crease, took the ball on the full in order to carve it over the cover-region.
However, he could not keep his shot along the ground and that is all Joe Root needed. The English captain dived pull length on his left and took an outrageous one-handed grab to ensure that the home side sunk further in their pursuit of England’s first innings total of 578.
This was the second wicket that Dom Bess got in as many overs. His first scalp came in the form of Indian captain Virat Kohli, who was flummoxed by the turn that the off-spinner got.
It was a nicely pitched up delivery that spun in from off-stump. Kohli lunged forward and pushed at it but to his surprise, the ball turned more than he would have anticipated leading to an easy bat-pad dismissal at short-leg.
At the time of writing, India were 4/115 with Rishabh Pant taking the attack to the English spinners. But it is fair to say that England has made giant strides towards inflicting the first defeat on India on home soil since 2017.
