Indian skipper Virat Kohli’s return to Tests ended in an unlucky fashion as the 32-year-old was adjudged LBW in a controversial manner during the second Test against New Zealand in Mumbai.

Kohli had just arrived at the crease after Cheteshwar Pujara‘s five-ball duck. The Wankhede track was offering quite a bit of bounce and turn to the spinners and Ajaz Patel was making the most of what was available. He looked like the best bowler in the first session and his biggest moment came in his 12th over.

Ajaz tossed one up and Kohli offered a straight bat but he missed the line of the ball. He was hit on the pads and the Kiwi fielders went up in appeal with the umpire raising his finger. Kohli was quite certain that he got some bat on it and went for the review.

Replays showed that the bat and pad were close to each other when the ball arrived and despite the number of cameras available, the umpire couldn’t get a conclusive angle to tell whether it was pad first or bat first.

As a result, he went with the on-field call and asked Anil Choudhary to stick to his decision. Kohli was visibly distraught and had a brief chat with Nitin Menon before walking off the field. It was Kohli’s tenth duck as the captain of India, the third-highest in Test cricket.
