In its initial development, Mumbai Cricket Association’s (MCA) Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) following a lot of deliberation.

The final nod:

After a lot of discussion with the MCA’s managing committee, The Mumbai Improvement Committee (CIC) made a final decision. The committee preferred Samant over Powar which implies that Samant will be coaching Mumbai Team in this Ranji season.

What led Mumbai to prefer Vinayak Samant over offspinner Powar?

On Thursday, the CIC held a meeting in which finalization of the coaches for senior teams and Under-19 teams took place.

Moreover, the committee was firm to prefer Powar ahead of others. However, due to a resolution which MCA passed a month ago, Powar was dropped to take the new assignment owing to his past behaviour.

This latest development is followed by the critical public comments of Powar about the association and also for quitting the job in a midway when he served as a spin consultant in the academy.

Powar has played 31 One-day Internationals for India besides two Test matches. Eventually, he represented Mumbai during 1999-2013 and has 148 First-class games under his belt.

Joint secretary’s statement:

Unmesh Khanvilkar, the joint secretary of MCA confirmed this development. He remarked it was eventually the resolution that went against Powar. Samant has represented Mumbai in 15 seasons which comprised of 101 first-class games for him

“All candidates were discussed. The MCA managing committee had passed a resolution earlier which says that MCA can’t consider candidates who leave their job mid-season for any other coaching role. Powar had resigned as academy coach mid-season last time. The CIC felt that it’s better to go with Samant as he knows the players and understands the system well. Under him, Mumbai even won the under-23 national championship,” Khanvilkar said.
