Royal Challengers Bangalore’s failure to win an IPL title till date understandably continues to baffle many. Since the inception of the league in 2008, the Bangalore-based outfit has has the services of the some of the biggest names in the world but are yet to go all the way in the tournament.

Even now they have the likes of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Yuzvendra Chahal in their ranks. But one way or another, they have failed to live up to the expectations. In twelve seasons so far, Royal Challengers Bangalore have made it to the final of the competition thrice – 2009, 2011 and 2016 – but ended up on the wrong side of the result on every occasion.

Their performance in the last few years has been a lot worse under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. Since making it to the final in 2016, they have not managed to make it past the league stage. In last three seasons, they have finished at the bottom twice while on the other occasion, they finished at a lowly sixth spot in the eight-team competition.

And thus when Kevin Pietersen interviewed Virat Kohli on Instagram on Thursday, he made sure to ask his former IPL teammate about Royal Challengers Bangalore’s failure to win the IPL so far. Pietersen had plied his trade for the Royal Challengers in the past.

In reply, Virat Kohli stated that the pressure of living up to the expectations have been a big roadblock in the team’s failure thus far. He suggested that his team needs to ‘get the joy back’ in order to do well.

“Big players in the team, there will be attention on the team. With big players, we will always be in the focus. We have reached 3 finals, not won, but then, those things are irrelevant, until you win the title. Even with the best team, we have not win. There is a team goal, we deserve to win the title,” said Virat Kohli.

“I think the more you try to do something, it tends to move away from you. I think we need to get the joy back into the team and not try and look to set goals,” he added.
