Virat Kohli Lends Support To Glenn Maxwell On Mental Health Issue

Depression has been a growing problem in today’s world. Cricketers have also been vocal about it in recent times. Recently, Australia’s Glenn Maxwell took an indefinite break citing mental problems. India skipper Virat Kohli lent his supports to Maxwell while talking about his own mental health problems.

Maxwell took an indefinite break from cricket due to difficulties with regards to his mental health last month. Australia’s team psychologist Dr Michael Lloyd lauded Glenn Maxwell for identifying the issues while the team management and has expressed full support to the all-rounder.

He missed a T20I against Sri Lanka and was not part of Australia’s series against Pakistan earlier this month. Following Maxwell’s sabbatical, Australia batsman Nic Maddinson also took a break by withdrawing from Australia A’s tour game against Pakistan to focus on mental health issues.

Speaking on the same, Virat Kohli lauded Glenn Maxwell for setting the right examples. He also cited instances from the 2104 England series while referring to the mental problems he had to face in his career.

“You know when you get to the international stage, every player that’s in the squad needs that communication – that ability to speak out. I think what Glenn (Maxwell) has done is remarkable,” Kohli said on the eve of the first Test against Bangladesh.

“I have gone through a phase in my career where I had felt that it was the end of the world. I just didn’t know what do and what to say to anyone, How to speak, how to communicate,” he recalled.

Continuing further, Virat Kohli stated that one should talk about all theses issue for a better understanding of an individual’s situation. In his international career, the only phase in which Kohli battled self-doubt was the 2014 tour of England in which he failed to even get a half-century and copped a lot of criticism.

 

“To be very honest, you (journalist) guys have a job to do. We guys have a job to do and everyone is focussed on what we need to do. It is very difficult to figure out what’s going on in another person’s mind,” Kohli concluded.
