Indian Captain Virat Kohli has won the ICC Spirit Of Cricket Award 2019. He received this for a gesture that involved him asking the audience to stop booing and start clapping for Steve Smith during a match. This game took place between India and Australia during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in England. Steve Smith had just returned to international cricket after facing a one-year ban by ICC for ball-tampering.
After 2011, it is the first time that an Indian has won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award. The last Indian to win it in 2011 was Virat’s predecessor, M.S. Dhoni. He led India to win the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011. Apart from this, Virat Kohli was also named as the Captain of the ICC ODI Team of the Year 2019 and ICC Test Team of the Year 2019 in the ICC Awards 2019.
Virat Kohli Expresses Disbelief After Winning The Award
When Captain Kohli won the ICC Spirit of Cricket award, fans couldn’t believe it as Kohli is generally very aggressive on the field. Virat himself looked a bit surprised after clinching the award. “I’m surprised that I have got it, after many years of being under the scanner for the wrong things,” Kohli said. Kohli further went on to state that he is against booing and this is what should not represent Indian fans.
