Team India ace-spinner especially in the Tests, Ravichandran Ashwin, has touted skipper Virat Kohli on par with some of the greatest captains the game has seen.

The fierce winning attitude and positive body language have rubbed on the other players too, and that has been evident from the way India has played in the tour of South Africa so far.

Ashwin hailed his skipper after Tamil Nadu’s opening match against Gujarat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

“He (Kohli) is someone who will go for a win come what may. He does not have a negative bone in his body, he always talks about a win, never about saving situations, we’re always moving ahead. It is good because the players know what is required of them. It gives an amazing amount of intensity to the team,” Ashwin was quoted as saying by the reporters following the Group C encounter.

“This is his first series overseas as a full-time captain. I am sure all the best captains in the past too have a set of home games. He (Kohli) is already on par with most of the greatest captains that have played the game. It is best that we give credit to him,” he said.

India lost the first two Tests of the three-match series thus surrendering the Freedom Trophy. However, when their backs were against the wall, they produced a magnificent performance in the final Test at Johannesburg, and since then they haven’t lost a match on that tour and have taken a 2-0 lead in the six-match ODI series.

Ashwin said the series was a close-knit affair despite ending in favour of the hosts.

“I feel the series was very very close and it was on the line. In fact, even at Cape Town and Centurion till the last ball was bowled we probably were in the game. Probably, Centurion a little bit earlier.I thought we played really good cricket,” Ashwin said.

“On both the occasions, if we had won the toss it would have made a massive difference. As a team, we really played well in South Africa. It gives us a lot of impetus going into the England series,” he added.

Meanwhile, Ashwin isn’t a part of the limited-overs set-up anymore, as wrist spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav have almost brought a premature end to the limited-overs career of Jaddu and Ashwin. Though it is still early days, but by the look of things, the wrist spinners are there to stay at least in the limited-overs clashes.
