The way MS Dhoni‘s diminishing abilities with the bat and as a captain coincided with meteoric rise of Virat Kohli and his subsequent taking of the team’s reigns, there were speculations that it would affect the friendship between the two stars.

However, the 29-year old, in a  recent interview, insisted that his friendship with Dhoni has withstood some testing times and has only grown stronger.  The India skipper went on to reveal that how people tried to destroy his friendship with his predecessor but without any success.

“Our friendship has grown over the years immensely,” he told Gaurav Kapur  in the show Breakfast with Champions.

“There have been times when people tried to poke controversies in between but neither does he read any of those things and neither do I. Hence, when we go out together, people can see us gelling well and there’s nothing between us,” he added.

Kohli went on to speak about his great understanding with the World Cup-winning skipper and also lauded his senior teammate’s cricketing mind.

“MS and I have a great understanding. For example, if we’re running between the wickets and he says two, I simply close my eyes and run. Because I’m so sure of his judgment, I know that I’ll make it.”

I don’t think I’ve come across a better cricketing brain just in terms of planning; knowing what’s happening in the game and can be done… Sometimes I like to follow my own instinct as well but if I ask him something eight or nine times out of 10, he tells you things that always work. So it’s a blessing to have him,” he said.

Kohli further said that that it has been his understanding with Dhoni that has helped the transition come through in a successful manner.

“The transition went pretty well. No one felt there’s a problem. Even on the field no one realized that there has been a transition,” he said.

“We still crack jokes and have a good laugh in between just like we did before. So, I feel really lucky that he’s still around during my initial years of captaincy and I’m still learning things from him,” he added.
