Virender Sehwag Opens Up On The Best Batsmen In The World, Backs Virat Kohli To Fire In South Africa

Virender Sehwag knows a thing or two about how to play in South Africa. The first Indian to score a triple century in Tests, Sehwag had made his Test debut in the African nation and had gone on to score a memorable century. But while the Nawab of Najafgarh enjoyed a good outing against the Proteas during his illustrious career even he could not enjoy a Test series win in the Rainbow nation.

India first toured the country in 1992 but are yet to end up on the winning side after a series. Another Indian team is now gearing up to take up the Proteas in their backyard and speculations are high that this team can end the nation’s long wait for a series win in South Africa.  Currently ranked number one in the world, India is yet to lose a series under Virat Kohli, having registered series wins over Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies, New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia.

Well, only time will tell whether Virat Kohli & Co. live up to the expectations, but Virender Sehwag is one of those many who are hopeful of a good show from the current side. The swashbuckling opener recently interacted with his fans on Facebook and spoke on the South Africa tour.

Sehwag tipped captain Kohli to take the attack to the opposition. Kohli has been in red-hot form since taking the captaincy. He scored a staggering 2818 runs across all formats in international cricket in 2017 – the third-highest tally ever recorded in a calendar year. His second successive double century earlier this month also helped him to set a new record for most double-centuries by captains in Tests – six – going past Brian Lara who had five. Having hit no double-century in his first five years of Test career, the 29-year has now managed six. Until 2015, he had 11 hundreds from 72 innings in 41 Tests with the highest score of 169. Since then, he has scored nine centuries in 22 Tests, converting six of them into double.

Sehwag also backed the in-form Rohit Sharma to deliver against the Proteas. Rohit recently led India in the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka and guided the team to series wins. Leading the team from the front, the right-handed batsman had scored a double century in the ODIs and a century in the T20Is.

The former India opener further talked about the best player in the world at the moment, saying Kohli, Joe Root, Williamson, David Warner and Rohit Sharma are currently the best of the lot.
