Gautam Gambhir has batted for a long time with his former opening partner Virender Sehwag as the duo had been crucial in giving India some crucial starts. Gambhir believes when Sehwag entered the international arena, no one thought he would be a success in the longest format as it looked like he is only meant to play white-ball cricket.

Besides his batting prowess, his mindset played a major role in his career. Sehwag was a fierce opener. Gambhir believes no one can match what he has achieved for India in the longest format as an opener. But his stats at home in Test cricket are better than that in white-ball cricket.

“No one can match him, no one actually thought that he can be such a successful Test opener. People only thought, he is going to be successful in white-ball cricket but if you see his record at home….he is far more successful in red-ball cricket and that is what Virender Sehwag is for you,” Gautam Gambhir said on Star Sports connect.

Sehwag iked to take charge at the bowlers from the word go and it hardly mattered to him if he got out on a duck or scored a triple century — his expressions would remain the same. It is one of these qualities which helped him achieve success as an opener of the Indian cricket team.

Sehwag went on to achieve several accolades for the national team as an opener. He could hit a boundary on the first ball and smash a six to reach his century. Besides that he was the first Indian cricketer to hit a triple century in the longest format of the game.

Sehwag retired with over 17000 international runs. He scored at an average nearly 50 in the longest format and 35.05 in the ODIs. He also played a few years in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
