Former India cricketer turned commentator, Virender Sehwag recently wished ICC Elite Panel umpire Kumar Dharmasena on his 47th birthday.

Meanwhile, Dharmasena, who hails from Sri Lanka is a renowned umpire. However, he had also represented Sri Lanka 31 Tests, and 141 ODIs.

The off-spinning all-rounder started off in 1994, gaining a reputation of an accurate bowler meant for the limited overs. He also played a key role during Sri Lanka best cricketing moments, as they lifted the World Cup in 1996.

The first nail in the coffin that threatened to derail his career big time came in 1998 when the ICC questioned the legality of his bowling action.

When Sri Lanka Cricket cleared Dharmasena in 2000, he was back as an all-rounder.

However, he called it a day in 2006 choosing another tale for himself in his second innings – once again on the field. He also became the youngest Sri Lankan to be an umpire.

He started off in 2009 in an ODI against India and soon moved up the ladder rather quickly to the Elite Panel of ICC umpires in 2011. More validation for his meteoric growth came a year later when he won the Umpire of the Year, 2012.

Meanwhile, Dharmasena also had his troubles during England’s Test tour of Bangladesh. In the first Test at Chittagong, he had eight of his decisions overturned, a record by some margin.

Sehwag wishes ‘elite’ Dharmasena

Shewag, who is currently with the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) squad took to Twitter to wish the illustrious umpire. He was his usual self and wished him hilariously.

Happy Birthday to an elite man. ICC elite panel umpire Kumara Dharmasena DRS,” Sehwag tweeted.

Meanwhile, Sehwag is the mentor of the Punjab side, who are having a good run in the tournament. They are currently at the top of the table with five wins from six games.

Last night, they beat Delhi Daredevils in a low-scoring encounter. However, they will look to continue their form going towards the business end of the tournament.
