Want Virat Kohli's Men To Win Major Tournaments - Sourav Ganguly

Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, who is all set to take over the BCCI president role wants Virat Kohli’s men to win major tournaments. It has been seven tournaments since India has not gone all the way in the big competition. The last major tournament India won was the Champions Trophy 2013 which was won under the leadership of former captain MS Dhoni.

Since then India has lost the final of the Champions Trophy 2017, semifinal of the T20 2016 World Cup, semifinal of the 2015 World Cup and semifinal of the 2019 World Cup. Consequently, India has failed to cross the final hurdle in the tournament despite playing well throughout the big event.

India hasn’t been able to win the crucial matches and they have missed out on the opportunity. Ganguly who understands the same feeling as he had also lost the 2003 World Cup final wants India to go all the way. The former captain believes India is too good a side not to win a big event.

“My only thing is that they need to win big tournaments. They are not going to win every time but they have gone through seven tournaments without winning one,” Ganguly told reporters at the Eden Gardens.

“They are a much better side than that. That is an area they need to get ready mentally. Talent is enormous. We reached the World Cup semis. That’s an issue which Virat needs to address. It doesn’t happen in the boardroom,” said the 47-year-old.

On the other hand, ICC has decided to host two back to back T20 World Cup and they have scrapped the Champions Trophy. The governing body has done that because the shortest form is in demand.

T20 Cricket is in demand.

 Ganguly said, “Times have changed. We will have to respect that. When Champions Trophy came in, I was the captain at that time and it was a huge tournament. With the advent of T20, people come in more for T20 games and the ICC is going by that.”

Ganguly added that he will try his best to give it back to Indian cricket by serving as BCCI President. The former skipper has all the experience under his belt and his focus is going to be on first-class cricket.

“It is a great responsibility and hopefully I can do a good job. Its two different lives — one is a cricketer and the second one of an administrator. Firstly, I think what makes me happier is that I got an opportunity in a tough situation and it gives me tremendous confidence and makes me feel that they have confidence in my ability. I have a young team and it will be new for all of them, but all of us will work to the best of our abilities and we won’t lack anywhere,” he expressed.

“First-class cricketers will be my priority and we will change their life. You only look at the top but we will also look at the bottom as many gems of Indian cricket lie there and we will change their life.”

Ganguly has been a great servant of Indian cricket and he would like to deliver the goods as a BCCI President.
