Wasim Jaffer, former Indian Test opener, has heaped high praise on talented young opener Prithvi Shaw.

Hailing Shaw as a ‘special player’, Wasim Jaffer compared that the 21-year-old Mumbai batsman with former swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag, adding that he has the ability to demolish any attack in the world.

Shaw stormed into reckoning back in 2013 when he broke a century-old record [1901] for the highest individual score [546] in domestic cricket. The right-hander went from strength to strength, becoming the first cricketer after his idol Sachin Tendulkar to score a hundred on Ranji and Duleep Trophy debut.

The 21-year-old led India to U-19 World Cup glory in 2018 and a few months later went on to join a select group of batsmen who scored a hundred on their Test debut (vs WI in Rajkot).

“I think he is a special player, without a doubt. The shots he hits, if he gets going, he has the ability of Virender Sehwag I feel. He can completely demolish an attack,” Wasim Jaffer told Aakash Chopra on the latters’ Youtube channel

Jaffer, however, added a word of caution for the young dasher, urging him to keep learning about his game. Prithvi Shaw scored a swashbuckling half-century during the 2nd Test in New Zealand but apart from that, he had a disappointing trip, where Jaffer feels, he got ‘exposed’ a bit.

“But somewhere I feel he needs to understand his game better, where he needs to take a backseat. I feel he got found out a little bit in New Zealand, got dismissed two times off a short delivery. He fell into their trap.” Wasim Jaffer said.

Apart from his penchant for run-making, Shaw has also raked up headlines due to disciple issues. And, Jaffer reckoned that this is where the youngster will have to improve, adding that he has the game to succeed at the top-level.

I also feel that he needs to get more disciplined in his off-field life. Because I feel he has the game to the succeed at international level. But he needs to be a lot more disciplined outside cricket also,” said Jaffer.
