England are being considered as the firm favourites for the upcoming World Cup. Currently the top-ranked ODI side in the world, England are looking red-hot at the moment. In fact, they have been the most dominating side in the ODIs in the last few years. They will enter the World Cup on the back of 11 straight series victories. In their last ODI series ahead of the World Cup, they thrashed Pakistan 4-0. In all of those four games, England scored more than 300 runs.

However, former Australia batsman Adam Gilchrist still has doubts over whether England’s credentials to become the world champions. The legendary wicketkeeper-batsman has backed his own country to go all the way in the tournament. Australia are the most successful team in the history of the competition, having won five of the eleven editions.

They are also the reigning World Champions and have got back their mojo with two impressive wins against India and Pakistan. With experience on their side, Australia are also strong contenders for the World Cup

“Australia. Certainly, on paper they’re as competitive as anyone with the names that are there now and the momentum they built up in the one-day format once they left Australian shores,” said Gilchrist as quoted by cricket.com.au.

“Obviously there’s confidence there. I just like what I’m seeing, and five out of 12 World Cups have come this way, so I can’t see any reason why we can’t win another one,” he added.

As he was speaking, he heard something crashing behind his back and could not resist a dig at Australia’s bitter rivals England. Referring to the crashing, Gilchrist cheekily said: “That’s a proper demolition. That was England in the semis.”

The World Cup, meanwhile, will get underway on May 30 with hosts England taking on South Africa in the tournament-opener.
