Royal Challengers Bangalore’s season is going from bad to worse with every passing game. The perennial underachievers of the league have now lost five games in a row this season and are standing on the verge of bowing out of the competition. Their latest defeat came against Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday at their home. The Royal Challengers were looking well set to register their first win of the season after piling 205 for 3.

Virat Kohli scored 84 while AB de Villiers scored 63 as the hosts scored their highest-ever total against Kolkata Knight Riders. In reply, Kolkata Knight Riders started off well but soon found themselves on the backfoot. The two-time champions would have then feared the worst when their skipper Dinesh Karthik departed on the final ball of the 17th over, leaving the team reeling at 153 for 5 while chasing 206.

The game was slightly drifting towards the hosts before Andre Russell took charge. Russell had managed 1 from his first two balls but it was not at all the pointer to the storm he was going to create at the MA Chinnaswamy Stadium. The Jamaican allrounder slammed 48 not out of just 13 balls to take Knight Riders home with five balls remaining. In the 18th over, he hit three sixes before hitting four more in the following over in addition to hitting one four. The Knight Riders eventually won with five balls remaining.

Following the defeat, the Royal Challengers Bangalore became so angry that they started throwing flags at the ground and in the stands.

Here is a clip of that incident:

Speaking at the end of the game, a dejected Virat Kohli came down hard on his bowlers, saying that the bowling in the last four overs was ‘just unacceptable’.

“There is no guessing there (about where they lost), the last 4 four overs that we bowled was just unacceptable. We needed to be more clever, nothing came off and we just cracked under pressure. That’s been our story this season so far. If you bowl with not enough bravery in the crucial overs, it’s always going to be difficult against power-hitters like Russell. I wasn’t really happy getting out at that moment, could’ve got 20-25 more. AB didn’t get much strike in the end. I thought the runs were enough on the board, we didn’t have enough composure. If you can’t defend 75 in the last four overs, then I don’t know if you can defend 100,” said Kohli.
