Melbourne Stars must have thought that they had claimed the prized scalp of Steve Smith when the Sydney Sixers star ducked under a Haris Rauf bouncer and the bails fell off on Friday. The batting superstar was batting on only two when the stumps lit up and bails fell off.

The Zing bails lit up as Steve Smith moved back towards his stumps after taking evasive action from the bouncer. The Melbourne Stars players started celebrating, thinking that Steve Smith had trod on his own stumps. But Melbourne Stars’ joy was short lived as the wind had played a cruel joke with them.

After the bails came off in the dramatic manner, the decision was sent upstairs and replays quickly confirmed the bails had been blown off the stumps by the wind.

“We’ve seen over the summer the ball hit the stumps and the bails don’t come off,” Shane Warne said on air. “This time there is a gust of wind and the bails come off.”

“That is probably not a bad way to try get Smudger (Smith) out,” Melbourne Stars player Peter Handscomb said in commentary. “Everyone in the world has tried everything else, let’s try a bit of hit wicket.”

Fortunately for the Stars, Steve Smith did not last long and was out for 24, caught behind off the bowling of Adam Zampa.

Here is a clip of that dramatic incident:

Meanwhile, Sydney Sixers thrashed Melbourne Stars by 43 runs to storm into the final of BBL. Sixers posted a modest total of 142 for 7 in the allotted 20 overs but it turned out to be too much in the end. The Stars came up with a horrific batting show and were all out for just 99.
