With Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara giving absolutely no chance to Sri Lankan bowlers, the visitors’ desperation was very much visible on the second day of the ongoing Test in Pune. The duo started the second day’s proceedings with the scoreboard reading 11 for 1 and looked solid right from the word go. Murali Vijay marked his comeback with a fifty as India looked well set on its path of strengthening its grip on the game. However, runs were not coming quickly and the hosts could manage only 86 runs in the first session.

But after the lunch, Sri Lanka came up with a plan to get rid of Vijay and nearly succeeded but Dilruwan Perera dashed their hopes by failing to hold on to a relatively easy chance. In the third over after the break bowled by Lahiru Gamage, Vijay played a uppish straight drive which passed between the umpire and Pujara to cross the fence. Sensing an opportunity, the visitors stationed Perera at short mid-on when Gamage came to bowl his next over. The move nearly paid off as Vijay once again played an uppish drive and it was looking primed to get caught by Perera but the latter failed to hold on it.

Cheteshwar Pujara, who was standing at the non-striker’s end, had ducked, making it actually easier for Perera to dive in for the catch but the Sri Lankan could only spill the catch and ended up falling on the Indian batsman.

Here is a clip of that incident:
