Watch – David Warner Gets In An Argument With Aleem Dar After He Awards Five Penalty Runs

Australia recorded a thumping whitewash against New Zealand when they handed them a 279-run defeat at the Sydney Cricket Ground to win the series 3-0. Meanwhile, in the morning session of day four, David Warner had a heated exchange with umpire Aleem Dar after the later awarded five runs as penalty to New Zealand for shocking reasons.

Warner was absolutely dumbfounded after being stung by one of the rarest cricket penalties by umpire Aleem Dar – and commentators were equally as surprised. Australia was penalised five runs by the on-field umpire for batsmen running down the centre of the pitch twice in the space of three deliveries.

ICC rules suggest that batsmen just like bowlers are meant to avoid running down the centre of the pitch and into the ‘protected area’ to avoid damaging sensitive areas of the wicket. Meanwhile, Dar had initially warned Marnus Labuschagne two balls prior before handing the penalty when Warner clipped a Henry slow ball to mid-wicket and took off for a single.

A shocking David Warner questionned his wrongdoing soon after Aleem Dar awarded the penalty runs.

“What?” Warner exclaimed. “What am I doing wrong? What am I doing?”

Dar replied “running down the middle.”

A frustrated Warner then questioned South African umpire, Marais Erasmus. “What do you want (me) to do, play the shot and then jump this way (sideways)?”

Meanwhile, Australia registered a convincing win bowling out New Zealand for 136 runs with Nathan Lyon completing another five-wicket haul; thus returning with ten wickets in the match. As a result, the Aussies have strengthened their second position in the ICC World Test Championship. Marnus Labuschagne won the man of the match and series award for his swashbuckling form throughout the three-match series.
