Ever since Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Jos Buttler through Mankad in the very first week of the Indian Premier League, the batsmen have been extra cautious to ensure they leave the non-striker’s end only after the bowler delivers the ball. And it has led to some hilarious incidents. One such incident took place on Monday in Mohali where Kings XI Punjab were hosting Sunrisers Hyderabad. The incident took place in the seventh over of the Sunrisers innings when David Warner took a hilarious dig at Ashwin through his action.

On the second ball of the over, Warner intentionally showed Ashwin that he has had hit bat inside the crease as the off-spinner was about to deliver the ball. Even the commentators took note of the incident as one of them said:

“Have a look at Warner though. It’s a deliberate way to tell Ashwin I am in the crease”

David Warner, nonetheless, went on to score his seventh consecutive fifty against Kings XI Punjab. However, his unbeaten knock of 70 from 62 balls eventually went in vain as Kings XI won the contest by 6 wickets while chasing 151. Warner did not look in his usual self and struggled to get going. He scored his slowest fifty in the IPL, reaching the milestone off 49 deliveries as Sunrisers finished on 150. In reply, the Kings XI chased down the total with one ball remaining.

Meanwhile, Ashwin has said that he does not regret Mankading Jos Buttler as he made it clear that his actions were well within the breaches of the game.

“The most important thing for me is what is my conscience saying, and my conscience is clear,” Ashwin added. “Those who know me well know that I will never do something illegal. You can’t say that ‘Ashwin is a villain because of this’. Because this is not my character trait. You don’t tell someone who has hit a bowler for 30 runs in an over that he is not a good person. He will hit the bowler, that’s part of the game,” he told Aaj Tak.

“And whatever rule is there in the game, I took advantage of that. I’m not denying I did that, but that’s the rule. If someone doesn’t like it, and you think it doesn’t fit into ‘sportsmanship’ in cricket, then you should remove the rule. As long as the rule is there… see our (bowlers’) foot can’t go beyond the line. Even the line belongs to the batsman. And in this rule, the only thing is the bat should stay in the crease. The batsman still gets two yards, he can be outside the crease, with his bat inside,” he added.
