The game of cricket can be harsh sometimes and Virat Kohli would certainly agree to it. The India skipper was on the verge of leading India to one of their most famous wins in Tests before his heroic knock came to a heartbreaking end in the ongoing first Test against England.

Kohli and Dinesh Karthik started the proceedings on day four with India needing 84 runs. With 5 wickets in hand, a good start was all India needed to calm down the nerves. However, the duo could only add two runs to the overnight score of 110 before Karthik walked back.

The wicketkeeper-batsman perished after edging a James Anderson delivery at second slip where Dawid Malan held a good low catch. Kohli was then joined in the middle by Hardik Pandya. The two took some time to settle down. However, once they had their eyes set, they hit a flurry of boundaries to ease the pressure. Pandya hit Stuart Broad for three boundaries in two overs to take the pressure off his skipper.

On the other end, Kohli was looking as classy as ever. He was leaving the balls outside the off and was pouncing on the lose balls to keep India in contention.

The 29-year old then reached his fifty when he hit his nemesis James Anderson for a four. But just when it looked Kohli is set to lead India to a fairytale win, disaster struck. Ben Stokes dismissed him for 51 to put England well on top and leave India reeling at 141 for 7.

Kohli failed to read the delivery from Stokes as the ball hit him on the pads. The 29-year old asked for a review but it did not save him. A dejected Kohli walked back with his head down. But at the same time, the crowd knew how good the knock was and gave Kohli a deserving standing ovation.

Here is a clip of that heartbreaking as well as beautiful moment:
