India had left for South Africa on the back of nine consecutive Test series wins including the 3-0 win over Proteas n 2015. The world number one Test side was yet to lose  Test series under Virat Kohli, and expectations were sky-high that the current side would end India’s long wait for their maiden Test series win in South Africa.

But contrary to popular speculations, the Kohli-led side failed to deliver all-round performance in the first two Tests, losing both of them to concede the series. The two losses brought widespread criticism of the side. From batsmen to captain, no one was spared. While the players were berated for their shoddy display with the bat, the captain was criticised for his bold selection calls which ultimately backfired.

With nothing much going India’s way, it looked the team is set for another humiliating loss in the third and final Test. However, the Kohli-led side produced a scintillating display and went on to achieve a  feat that not many Indian teams had achieved in the past. India defeated South Africa by 63 runs in the third and final Test to end the series on a high. Before the latest win in South Africa, India had managed to win just two games in 17 attempts on the African soil with the last one coming in 2010.

After a brave batting display in the second innings to post 247 on a pitch which behaved like a minefield, India bowled out the hosts for just 177 to win the match. The visitors had their back against the wall after Dean Elgar, and Hashim Amla added 119 runs for the second wicket. But just when it looked the hosts would canter to another win, India took the last 9 South African wickets for just 53 runs to register a famous victory.

The win more or less wiped away the bad memories of the first two games and the players and team-management’s celebration after the win said it all. The Indian camp looked upbeat and extremely delighted as it made its way into the dressing room with captain Virat Kohli leading the way following the famous victory.

The BCCI posted a video on its official Twitter handle which showed the players and the coaching staff sporting wide grins on their face as they celebrated the win.
