Team India fast bowler Ishant Sharma snared his second five-wicket haul in home Tests as they took honours on day one of the historic day-night Test against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens. The host secured a crucial 72-run lead after knocking off the visitors for only 106 runs in the first-ever pink-ball Test. India’s aim will now be to secure a massive lead and go for the kill to inflict their third consecutive whitewash in the red-ball format.

Ishant returned with a five-wicket haul with support from Umesh Yadav (three) and Mohammed Shami (two) to bowl out Bangladesh within the first two sessions. Liton Das tried to resist the Indian pacers but a venomous bouncer which hit his head forced to him retire hurt. The Bangla Tigers had to use two concussion substitute; the second being Nayeem Hasan who was again hit by Shami; who looked a different set of a bowler with the pink cherry.

Ishant Sharma dazzle in Kolkata

Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 59 runs after adding 94 runs for the third wicket with Cheteshwar Pujara to bail out India after losing early wickets. Kohli will hope to convert this to a big knock and help India secure a massive first-innings lead. However, the day belonged to Ishant Sharma, who picked his first five-wicket haul at home in over 12 years.

The fast bowler from Delhi was a class apart and seems to mature with every game. Although he is not a part of the limited-overs set-up anymore Ishant continues to dazzle in Tests. Since the start of 2018, Ishant has bagged 62 wickets in 17 Tests. His average of 19.79 in this period is nearly 17 runs lower than the 36.55 he averaged in the period preceding that. In 2019, that average has dropped even further, to 15.85. It’s by far the lowest he has averaged across the 13 calendar years that his career has spanned.

Meanwhile, attending the press conference at the end of the day’s play, Ishant Sharma looked a lot easy and was having fun while answering the questions from the reporters. He even gave an epic response to a journalist who asked him whether he can see the pink ball during the night and evening session.

“Yes, sir. When the lights are on, you can see the ball,” as the whole room bursts into laughter.
