Kane Williamson-led side New Zealand could not really live up to the expectations of their huge number of fans attending the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. When Trent Boult castled Joe Burns in the very first over of the match, the MCG did not look like an Australian venue as the New Zealand fans made their presence felt.

But as the game passed, the fans had very little to cheer about as Australia made light work of their bitter rivals once again. In the end, the hosts wrapped up the game inside four days, crushing New Zealand by 247 runs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Nathan Lyon grabbed four wickets as New Zealand were all out for 240 while chasing an improbable target of 488.

With this win, Australia’s unbeaten run against their trans-Tasman neighbours has now stretched to 25 years. Tom Blundell gave the visiting fans something to cheer about by scoring a fine fighting ton. But his batting partners failed to show the same courage and departed in quick succession.

After being rocked by three wickets in nine deliveries from James Pattinson in the morning, New Zealand managed to stop the rot for a while as they reached tea at 131 for 4. Nathan Lyon then gave Australia the crucial breakthrough by dismissing BJ Watling. The remaining batsmen could not do much either as New Zealand were all out for 240.

Kane Williamson talks to fans:

In a brilliant gesture after the match, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson walked up to the Black Caps fans and thanked them for their support throughout the Test. Kane Williamson was all praise for the fans for their passion despite the result of the game before the fans also cheered for their captain.

“This Test match has truly been special and hugely appreciated. The passion has been truly inspiring. We want to thank you guys,” said Kane Williamson before being cheered on by the fans.
