The ongoing One-day international between Australia and New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground have been capturing attention for more reasons than one. Firstly, due to the rapid coronavirus outbreak, the match is taking place without spectators. Secondly, the Kiwis have committed a couple of DRS blunders that might come back later to bite them.

David Warner and Aaron Finch started cautiously and yet, put on 124 for the first wicket. However, things could have taken a turn for good for the Black Caps if they had chosen to review a caught-behind off Aaron Finch in the second over bowled by Trent Boult. The Australian captain played a pull shot off a bouncer from Boult which he had edged it. But Kane Williamson decided against using the review. As the commentators claimed it was a big noise, the ultra edge concluded the same from replays after the ball went past the bat.

New Zealand give the Australian captain a second lease of life:

Finch received a second reprieve when batting on 23. Mitchell Santner bowled a quicker delivery that struck him on the pads before the bat. Santner was clearly interested in a review; however, Williamson was again unsure and didn’t opt for the DRS. When the replays came on, ball-tracking showed three reds, with the ball hitting the leg-stump. Santner won the battle at the end against the opposing skipper, taking his wicket for 60.

The tourists managed to pull things drastically back after a 124-run stand between Finch and Warner. They sent back Steve Smith and D’arcy Short for 14 and 5. At the time of writing this, the home side had been reduced to 248-6 in 49 overs with Marnus Labuschagne and Pat Cummins at the crease. Warner is the top run-scorer so far for them with 67.
